An Education Crisis

Sub-Saharan Africa’s education systems are plagued by issues of quality, accessibility, and equity. According to UNESCO, sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate of out-of-school children at one-fifth among 6-11 year olds, one-third among 12-14 year olds and 60% among 15-17 year olds. Those that are in school often receive low-quality education which limits opportunities for the rest of their lives. Despite the many challenges, teachers show incredible resilience, creativity and resolve. Our belief is that teachers are best equipped to develop solutions to the complex, and context-specific challenges of Africa’s education systems.

A Bold Vision for Africa

In 2020, His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II set out to address the enormous educational crisis facing sub-Saharan Africa by establishing the MSII SDG Initiative. The MSII SDG Initiative will address both SDG 4 (Quality Education) & SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by creating a movement of grassroots teacher-changemakers.

“Africa has everything it needs to transform its education systems from within.”

— His Highness Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, 14th Emir of Kano
